Mace and Flails

Medieval mace, flails and War Clubs

There is a common misconception that a mace and flail are the same. A medieval mace is a single rigid weapon. A flail is a weapon with a handle with chains attaching one to three spiked metal balls.

Mace and flails were commonly used between the 13th and 15th century in Europe. At first they were commonly used by peasant soldiers but later was used more and more by Medieval Knights. Two types of mace was introduced. The spiked mace and the flange mace.
