Ancient and Medieval Shields



A shield was generally designed for the protection of a soldier from other weapons. Materials used we metal, wood, hide and wicker. Uses of the shield varied. Light troops who relied on speed carried smaller light shields and heavy troop carried heavier shields.>

The Romans became master of the shield and offensive move against soldiers with shields. The Roman turtle formation provided protection on all sides and above. They used spears and hand weapons offensively while in this formation. The Romans also invented the Pilum. It was a spear like weapon with a thin shaft and tip. Once lodged in the opponents shield it rendered it almost useless.

During the middle ages the styles and use if shields trended toward mounted troops and Knights. The most famous designs were used in battle and in jousting tournaments.
