What is a good Functional Sword?

January 11th, 2010

We have explained what a functional sword is, son now we look at what’s a good functional sword.

The answer is of course, what you are going to do with it and how much you are willing to spend. If you intend to use the sword in a rigorous manner then be prepared to spend a lot. Some stage combat and reenactments require a top quality sword for heavy use. For safety sake buy only top quality swords. Don’t think a $39.95 sword will do it. Sometimes you will get lucky but cheap swords will not hold up.

For most of us a $150.00 to $300.00 sword will do just fine. These are carbon steel swords that can hold up to moderate or light use. There are many of them out there so the selection is large and varied.

I personally prefer Windlass, Hanwei and Ritter Steel, in that order. The main reason is availability. These swords are available which keeps the prices down and quality up.

Windlass is my favorite because they are good quality, consistency and look and feel better than most. A great example is the 500784 Musketeer Rapier. It is not only a good sword but feels good in your hand and looks great. There are many other examples in the Windlass line.

Hanwei swords are great. Maybe even the best swords available. However, the can cost a lot but offers a good selection of top quality, well made swords. Like Ritter Steel swords the $150 to $300 swords are a bit heavy and plain. Overall they are some of the best but could cost a lot. They are well worth looking at.

Hope this helps in your buying decision.

Japanese Katanas a Popular Collectors Item

May 9th, 2009

Japanese Katanas is a kind of sword often used by the Samurai warriors so people often call these swords Samurai swords. In the sixteenth century, Japanese warriors used different types of swords of different lengths and the term Katana was used for the Samurai swords that were long and had curved blades. Nowadays, the use of Japanese Katanas are for martial practice or for decoration on the walls by the people, who are fond of collecting swords as a part of their collector hobby. Japanese Katanas are of different types so if you want to choose a katana sword for practice of martial art or as a part of your collection you must have the knowledge about the difference between the Japanese Katanas and the wakizachi.

The Samurai warriors carried both types of Samurai swords when they went for war or followed their masters as protectors. The Japanese warriors always carried two swords in their belts and both the sabers adorned the left side of their belt. The two swords were of different sizes one was long and the other was short out of the two the longer sword, which in Japanese language is daito or the longer saber, is actually the Japanese Katana and the shorter saber is the wakizachi. These two sabers got the name of Samurai swords and many people often confuse it as the Japanese Katanas. In the present time when other weapons have replaced the sword as the battle weapon, the Samurai swords or the Japanese Katanas have become collector’s item.

Therefore, nowadays these swords or sabers manufacturers have adopted the decorative style of creation that adds color and beauty to the interior where it decorates the wall. The most popular decorative Japanese Katanas or Samurai swords are the engraved ones that have the crane or the bamboo style on the guard, known as the tsuba in Japanese. The engraved portion is at the bottom of the handle usually made for protection of the hand and the shape looks like a loop or the buckle of a belt. The Japanese Katanas crafted in the crane style are swifter and lighter than amongst all the types of Samurai swords. The pierced style in the guard indicates wisdom and longevity.

The main difference between the bamboo katana and the crane katana is that the crane katana has hard steel or Swedish steel whereas the bamboo katana is made of softer steel than the crane katana. This soft steel gives a special edge to the blade, as it is not only shock resistant but also has forceful cutting abilities. Therefore, you should always be careful while cleaning your collection of Japanese Katanas as the sharp edge can cut very easily. It is advisable to keep these swords out of the reach of children as they are very dangerous and can cause serious injury. Japanese Katanas or Samurai swords have tight scabbards to avoid the risk of accidental unsheathing that can cause irreparable damage to you or your family members. Therefore, you have to be very careful while pulling out your Japanese katana from the scabbard.

Sword Buying Guide

Brothersmith-Swords Buying Guide

When looking for swords there is only one question you should ask. What is the intended purpose of the sword? This question should guide you through the purchasing process and determine the type, quality and price of the sword.

Let’s go over a few common answers. Most sword purchases are for decoration, a costume, a sword collection, a production or reenactment or sporting event. The purpose should determine which sword you should buy. This article should help you help decide the sword you want and the price you pay.

The first consideration is what type of sword you want. The most common types of swords are historical replicas, fantasy and movie swords and fencing swords. You probably have something in mind, so this should be a fairly easy step.

Next is what are you going to do with the sword. Here is where you can really save some money. Many people pay more than they have to or get less than they need by not thinking carefully about this.

Decorative Swords

Buying a decorative sword is simple and can be inexpensive.  Just find one you like. There are a couple things you will need to consider.  First is the materials used.  Does the sword have a stainless steel blade? Carbon steel blades rust and require much more cleaning and maintenance than stainless steel. We recommend you can find one you like with a stainless steel blade. Less maintenance and looks good. Second, what does the sword come with? Many decorative item com with a plaque for wall mounting or a stand.  Why not save money and get as much as you can.

Costume Swords

A costume sword is a little more complicated. One main consideration is does it have a scabbard. You’ll need a scabbard if you are going to wear it. Also don’t forget you will also need some way of attaching it to wear. Many scabbards don’t come with a belt, belt frog or hanger.  Don’t forget to buy something to attach it to your costume if your sword doesn’t come with one.

To find the appropriate sword, you may have to go with a carbon steel blade for your costume.  Many replica swords come only with carbon steel blades.  This is not a bad thing. The qualities of the materials are much better and more authentic. They may be a little more trouble but closer to what you will be happy with. However, if you can find a stainless sword that fits, go for it and save.

Sword Collections

Sword collectors generally know a great deal about the swords they buy. The main advice here is shop around, don’t pay too much.  Google shopping is a great place to find price comparisons by manufacturers’ numbers.  This is a great way to save.

Plays and Reenactments

Here is where it gets more complicated.  You have to deal with price, quality and safety. You should always put safety first.  A sword of inferior quality can not only spoil your performance but be dangerous if broken. If you have control over your actors and can restrict them to light or moderate use then you can get away with a functional sword under $ 300.  If not we recommend going with a more expensive battle ready sword that can take heavy use.

We also recommend practical swords. Practical swords have unsharpened blade and also feature a rounded point.  You might want to also consider fencing swords that come with safety features, like blunted or safety tips. Even an unsharpened blade with a sharp point can cause injury.

There is a lot of good information on the web from production weapons masters on what you might also want to consider.

Sporting Events

Fencing and other martial arts sports that require swords have become more popular over the last few years. They provide great exercise and enjoyment.  They can also be very expensive.

The key here is not to wind up with an expensive wall hanger.  Until you are sure the sport is for you, there are a lot of stores on the web that carry good and inexpensive equipment.  Don’t invest a fortune in expensive equipment and find out it’s not for you.  You can always upgrade later and use you less expensive equipment for practice.

Summary

We hope this buying guide will assist you with your purchase. The key is to find the balance between buying enough sword to meet your needs without paying more than you must. Remember other articles on this blog and other sites can also help you make the right decision.

What Does Functional Swords Mean?

What Does Functional Swords Mean?

I have been selling swords and knives for the past seven years at Swords, Non-firing Replica Guns & Bowie Knives from Brothersmith Swords, doing research and answering questions on the different types of swords and their uses. I’ve lived for six years in Europe and seven in the Orient seen and held swords that are easier dated in centuries rather than years.

To keep it simple Functional Swords are made to be used and to keep an edge. However, to really answer this question you have to explain the three kinds of swords people sell. The first is a Decorative Sword. These are swords made to decorate and for display only. They are very elaborate and are sometimes heavy replicas of historical, fantasy and movie swords. They often come with a sword plaque or stand for their display in the home or office. The blades are made of stainless steel and are generally highly polished. They look really good but are not designed or made for use. The second is a Costume Sword. While they have many of the same characteristics of a decorative sword, they are generally lighter and come with a sheath or some means of wearing the sword with a costume. The last is the Functional Sword.

So What’s The Difference?

Quality is the thing that makes a functional or battle ready sword different. The quality of the materials, design and workmanship all play a part in a good functional sword. The materials are very important. High carbon steel is generally used to make the blades and other more durable materials are used for the guard, pommel and grips. High carbon steel is much harder. This type of steel is better suited for keeping an edge and less likely to break upon contact. The quality of the materials use in the guard, pommel and grip are of equal importance. A great high carbon steel blade with a pot metal or inferior guard and grip is a wall hanger.

Some people say the original design of a sword is the best. I agree. Swords were originally made for combat at the time they were designed and forged. Some like the samurai sword were designed to cut while others like the medieval claymore and long sword were made to bash and stab. The major design element is the tang. The tang is the part of the sword that attaches the blade to the guard, grip and pommel. Some decorative and costume swords use a rat-tail design. The blade is welded to the tang and not very durable. The best functional design is a full tang. Here the blade and tang are on piece of metal and less likely to break.

Workmanship may well be the most important. There are two basic ways to make a sword. They are machined and hand forged. The machined sword is almost entirely forged by a machine while the hand forged is done by a human. Purest say hand forged is the only way. However, I’ve seen many machined forged swords I feel more comfortable with. The key is micro-fractures. During the forging process sometime small fractures are left inside the sword. The more fractures there are the more likely the sword can break. There are many carbon steel swords not advertised as functional because of inconsistency. One sword might be great the next might not hold up. You take your chances when you buy these swords for use. One last note on design, a practical sword is made for stage plays and reenactments where safety is the key. Practical swords have rounded or dull edges and points.

Functional swords can cost much more than decorative or costume swords. Prices can run from less than $ 100.00 for an entry level sword to thousands for a made to order sword. Prices are also based on the degree of functionality. An entry level sword can cost from under $ 100 to $ 200. These are light duty swords which are great for a beginner. A medium duty sword or battle ready sword can cost up to $ 1000 and are usually used in reenactments and plays. Heavy duty swords can cost thousands. They can be used for any purpose but are better suited for extended use as in a nightly stage combat plays.

After being in the US Army for 21 year, I can tell you anything can be broken. No matter how well a sword is made abuse, neglect and improper use will damage or break any sword. I’m not talking about small dings in the sharp edges. Some carbon steels are so hard it’s almost impossible to sharpen them. Most swords are forged so the edges are softer and can be sharpened. Please consult a qualified fight director on the proper use and quality of weapons needed for heavy use in stage plays.

I hope this helps to explain the term Functional Swords. One rule to use in selecting a sword is safety first. You are buying a weapon and get what you pay for, price should always be second.

Buying the best Samurai Sword

April 13th, 2009

Samurai swords are popular collectors items. It is one of the interesting hobbies and at times, it can prove to be an expensive hobby too. But for those who collect samurai words, price is never a problem. They will be ready to spend any amount of money as long as they find their exotic samurai swords. Though we do not use these samurai swords for self-defense, we should ensure that we get good quality samurai swords for the money we pay. Many of us buy samurai swords to decorate our walls and as such.

One of the major factors that you need to take note while buying you samurai swords is the quality of the blade. If you want to use it, then full tang samurai swords are the best. Full tang samurai swords are made of single piece of steel. These are also sometimes called battle ready swords. If you do not intend to use it for self-defense or for your exercises, then you can go for a samurai sword that is not full tang and you can just use it as a decoration on the wall. So you must decide in advance, what type of sword you need. If you are not sure what exactly you are looking for, then it is best to compare different types of samurai swords before buying your piece so that you will get familiar with your options.

Samurai swords are available in different types of steel and the cost of the sword varies depending upon the quality of the steel used. You can find samurai swords in folded steel, stainless steel and high carbon steel. If you are looking for a strong weapon then folded steel will be the best option for you. In terms of the quality of the steel used, high carbon steel is the best though not the strongest steel.

Depending on your taste, you can either go for Japanese Katanas, the Wakizashi sword or the Tanto. Amongst these, the most popular samurai sword that is known to many of us is the Japanese Katanas. Many Americans have bought into the habit of collecting samurai swords. The reason for this new trend could be the increasing popularity of martial arts. Whether you are getting your samurai swords for self-defense or as a collector’s item, you should never pick your swords without making a good online research. If you are new to this field, you must first learn about the different types of samurai swords available. Without knowing your options, you may end up choosing decoration piece while what you actually want is a functional sword.

If the samurai sword that you pick is not of good quality, then it will lose its lustrous new look soon. The attractiveness of a samurai sword lies in its shiny blade and if the blade takes an old look, then your samurai sword will be no good to be used as a showpiece. So do take time to select your samurai sword through careful review.
